It's been challenging year with regard to multiple project management, and particularly frustrating in regard to this model. We have experienced a number of issues during testing that I required to be resolved, additionally, electronic component quality and supply problems occurred, and the implementation of the decoration changes requested long ago.
The 'knock on' effect is that it takes time for a problem to be revealed, time to resolve and, as is the nature of these things the factory will move schedules around if a project stalls whilst we or another subcontractor resolves issues.

We are now at the stage where I am expecting final paint 'chips' for the ARC and Powergen liveries and the model will start production shortly after I approve these.

With a certain retailer (to whom I do not shop with yet they are unavoidable) advising delivery August/September - can one assume production on the class 59 has started?

Can we expect to see pre-production livery samples, I remember before Dapol confirming the DB example was being edited.

That's a bit of a shocker for a date. If delivery is due in August/September, then production should've been complete by now as shipping itself takes about 6 weeks and customs clearance takes 1-2 weeks. If they are in production or on their way then that's good news!

      Hi,
Thanks for the enquiry. it has indeed been a while since an update has been made. I wish I could simply agree with ans answer the comments above, but in fact the whole of manufacturing (in China) and transport to the UK is undergoing an extremely challenging period which creates uncertainty throughout. I will attempt to share a little of the challenges which I and my colleagues deal with on a daily basis in this (rather long-winded) post:

In common with other manufacturers (inside and outside of our industry and as has been reported and discussed elsewhere) we are affected by various delays in China (and indeed in the movement of product from China to the UK). Unfortunately, the old rules of what 'should be' have not applied for some time. Manufacturers such as ourselves have backlogs of finished goods, work in progress, and (due to space restraints preventing parts production) unused tooling (which needs storing). Only design is unaffected. Logistics and shipping also face delay due to insufficient/delayed vessels, loading/unloading delays caused by port and warehouse congestion as well as crewing challenges.

The ability of factories to progress product to the next stage varies almost on a daily basis as they are hit by another delay due to labour or material shortages, 3rd party delays (i.e. Electronic components and PCBs) or simply, lack of storage space due to shipping delay. All of this outside of their control. This means that some factories will be able to produce product today, whilst others must delay. That maybe reversed tomorrow.
It all translates to a somewhat unpredictable release pattern of our models in the UK and means that statements made by us with good intention, based on available information are subject to revision due to the changing circumstances at our factories. (Currently the area in which our factories are based is the Chinese 'epicentre' of a new Covid outbreak which is creating many difficulties in simple day to day activities for our Chinese colleagues). The situation changes frequently and information travels slowly.

The result is frequent revision of project planning and release schedules and, although we do not take this view at present, if the situation continues this could eventually slow investment in new projects until 'pipeline' product is delivered and the delays revert to a more normal situation.

To answer the question more concisely, I have received and approved the paint chip samples mentioned previously and due to the combined effects of the above, I am waiting for decorated samples of the revised versions, in common with all our products, as soon as they are shipped to us (i.e. we are certain) and we have checked samples, we will issue an update. With production of the class 59 still scheduled for Q3, we would expect that allowing for shipment time) we will have the 59 in the shops during Q4.

      Thanks for your continued patience.
      Andy

Thank you for this thorougher and honestly entertaining/insightful read. I had my suspicious that the retailer was working on incorrect information. The class 59 has been a long developed product and I remain certain on delivery it is going to be a wonderful addition to the modellers board. Nothing seem's unaffected from production in the far east...I am waiting for all sort of things order a while ago.

Hi Andy.... it's now Q4. Any news of when these will arrive? Did they get produced in Q3 already?

        Thanks,

        Guy

lyneux , Hi Guy, Thanks for the question. I understand your frustrations as they mirror ours. The short reply is that, we will announce progress when we are sure there is something to announce, since it is not helpful for us to restate that there is 'no news'.

Of course the long reply is more complex, and I hope helps explain the general situation.
As with other models and manufacturers our estimated release dates are just that and can be affected by many factors, a few days delay can translate into weeks as production schedules are revised to accommodate. We have however publicised dates as at the time we believed that they were achievable. This model does seem particularly affected as it was announced long before I joined the company and in fact before development had commenced. The good news is that only production is to be completed.

The difficulties our Chinese colleagues and their various subcontractors all face due to power cuts and an ongoing labor shortage and other supply chain difficulties conspire towards making any long term promises regarding dates impossible to keep.
As I've commented elsewhere, as it's very difficult to project project key stages with any degree of accuracy at the moment, our policy is to provide updates only when landmark events (e.g. EP, production etc.) have been reached, ensuring that we are accurate to within a few weeks, this does mean that there are periods of 'no news' as a result.
Overall, this is not a situation which can be tolerated, but one we fear will not resolve overnight, so we are adapting our 'pipeline' by ensuring future releases are brought forward and are in development before we even release the 1st batch of models. A strategy which we used with the JHA wagons and other projects to minimise any perceived delays.

I do hope that we will be able to start reporting more positive progress with this and our other projects both announced and, as yet unannounced (as we have many exciting developments in progress).

          Kind regards
          Andy

Andy Dapol many thanks for the update. the delays are understandable. Just looking for the positives (ie. this is not a criticism!).... in your previous update you said 'waiting for decorated samples of the revised versions' and in your latest update say 'only production is to be completed'. Does that mean you have received the latest decorated samples? If so then that is some good progress.

Hello there, thanks for the comment. Andy is on holiday at the moment and I am sure he will respond himself next week on his return. If it helps though, I know there has been quite a bit of toing and froing from China and that now, as far as we are concerned all issues have been resolved and we are just waiting for production. This has been (infuriatingly) delayed because of events in China, but it will happen soon for sure.

              Kind Regards

              Joel

Lets hope it's before the Chinese New Year, I think everyone is so looking forward to this model with high expectations.

HI, Martin Jones. Our Chinese colleagues are facing many difficulties which are reflected across our industry. This fact makes a pre-CNY production very unlikely, as Joel and I mentioned we will issue an update once we have a tangible date for this model.

                Andy shaw , LaGrange ,
At the moment production is slowly progressing, manual printing is about to start, but in general the production situation is very unpredictable as all factory areas are still affected by covid and power issues. Once we have finished assembly and have arranged shipping we will issue a more detailed estimate of delivery.
Please keep an eye on the press, facebook etc. for the official Dapol announcements.
                Regards

is there any pictures of the updated colour samples. I don't want to receive models with the wrong colours on them. I know there had been problems in the factories etc but at about 5 years it is a bit of a joke how long the model has taken. Other manufacturers have developed, manufactured and delivered items in about half the time.

I'm afraid not, but we will have production samples fairly soon. We are well aware of the prolonged lead time on this and we can only apologise. These things sometimes happen, you hit a snag and it throws the project into a long delay and unfortunately, we have hit a couple of snags with this. I take your point about other manufacturers and we have ourselves have delivered products in a shorter time frame .However, I also have to point out other manufacturers also experience delays, it is unfortunate but sometimes a factor of small batch manufacturing in the Far East. My apologies once again.
